Between 3 and 5 years old, children's eyes are still in the process of maturing. From the age of 5, although the eye is not yet mature, it is time to take it to the ophthalmologist. Between the age of 6 and up to twelve, the eye reaches full maturity.

For this reason, the ideal age to take the child to the ophthalmologist is from 5 or 6 years. From the moment the eye begins to mature and the child can identify movements, read and facilitate the interpretation of certain projected objects, diagnosis is easier.

In addition, this ideal age to take the child to the ophthalmologist coincides with the beginning of school in Primary and with a greater demand at the academic level. After this first assessment, it is recommended that once a year a specialist perform an assessment of the child's vision.

Actually, four out of ten children wear glasses or contact lenses. Extending the time to wear glasses to children is detrimental to their visual health. Wearing corrected vision using corrective lenses or contact lenses is the most convenient from the beginning.

It should be noted that the human being receives 90 percent of the information of the environment through the visual system and, in the early stages of schooling, we have to learn many things and the demands on the visual system are very high.

Therefore, any alteration must be easily identifiable by the adults around the child. Various studies with schoolchildren have revealed that between 15 and 20 percent of the drops in academic performance are due to vision problems.

Beyond diets and healthy living, the best prevention for vision problems is information. People who are constantly with children should watch for signs of a possible visual defect.

If a child has a frequent headache and recognizes pain between the eyes, temples, or back of the neck, or winks, or loses attention or interest after playing a common game with other children soon, we may find ourselves facing a visual problem. There is a direct relationship between certain areas of learning, which can be affected by visual problems, and poor academic results in the classroom.

New technologies can be perfect allies of vision. In fact, recent studies support its therapeutic role when children have a fixation, tracking or visual acuity problem. The problem lies in time, which can lead to problems of eyestrain or fatigue, manifested by itching or dry eyes.

Every 2 or 3 hours of work on the screen we should have about 10 minutes of rest and this is not fulfilled at all. Therefore, the ideal way to avoid visual fatigue, caused by having your gaze fixed on the screen, would be to set intermittent visual rest times.
