Glasses are the easiest and most comfortable method to correct children's visual problems., taking into account that they do not require any special maintenance or hygiene. Its use as a visual correction system is essential for the correct development of the child at school, since a vision problem can affect their learning and influence their academic results.

Many families are concerned about the social acceptance of children with glasses. However, most young children tend to think that children with glasses are smarter than those who do not wear them, as well as more honest than those who do not. That is, children do not tend to judge the attractiveness of their peers based on whether they wear them or not.

The use of glasses or corrective lenses from the moment the visual defect is detected prevents, in many cases, the increase in diopters and even serves, in others, to restore vision. Thus, experience has shown that hyperopic patients with less than 3 or 4 diopters, who have worn glasses as children, no longer need them as adults.

For the children, glasses are the easiest method to tackle a visual defect. Glasses in children allow a first-hand correction, which is necessary and is not incompatible with fashion because there is a wide variety of designs.

Currently, there are silicone materials on the market, which allow them to recover their initial shape even when they have been deformed, with wide bridges to adapt to your nose and where the rod is perfectly picking up the auditory pin so that the frame does not move.

Between 6 and 12 years old, a contact lens can begin to be adapted to children who require it. Before it can also be done, in principle, but from the therapeutic point of view, under very special conditions. For example, if the requirement of certain sports makes it advisable, contact lenses made of soft material can be worn with frequent replacements, since the handling of contact lenses requires special hygienic conditions to avoid infections in the eye.

Only in some exceptions, we could use semi-rigid materials with high oxygen permeability, in the event that some type of special therapy had to be done. Right now, the contact lens is a perfect alternative to glasses, especially in cases of asymmetries, that is, when there is a difference in prescription between one eye and another.

Refractive surgery is not recommended for children because at an early age the eye has not reached its optimum degree of maturation. In principle, general eye surgery is only indicated for strabismus. Refractive laser surgery, which is used to remove diopters, depends on two variables: the physiology of the eye and the corneal thickness.

Only, from the age of majority, we have a functionally developed and mature eye, so it is not advisable to perform it before the eye has reached its full development. Only in some cases, between 12 and 18 years of age, can the convenience of performing refractive surgery be assessed for a special indication.
